The Senior Law Project of the Southeastern Massachusetts Legal Assistance Corporation is funded in part by the Coastline Elderly Services, Inc. (CES), with Title III funds from the Older Americans Act and the Massachusetts Bar Foundation. CES and its programs are funded in whole or in part by contracts with the Massachusetts Executive Office of Elder Affairs.
The Seniors Law Project was developed to provide legal assistance to elders (age 60 and over) residing in: Acushnet Dartmouth Fairhaven Gosnold Marion Mattapoisett New Bedford Rochester Eligibility for services is based on age, residence and Project priorities.
While there are no income criteria, the Project does direct its efforts to those elders with the greatest economic and social need. SMLAC provides legal assistance with no charge for questions or problems with: Public Benefits: Social Security, Supplemental Security Income (SSI), cash assistance, food stamps and other entitlement programs. Housing: Landlord/tenant problems in private and public housing, especially evictions. Health /Health Insurance/Long Term Care: Problems with Medicaid (Mass Health), Medicare, private insurance and institutional care. Document Preparation: Power of attorney, wills for home-bound and institutionalized seniors and in emergency situations.
There is no need to wait until the problem becomes serious! Call for advice as soon as you think you have a problem! For other legal problems, a referral may be made to a private attorney. Project staff can assist you in Portuguese and Spanish. Elders wishing to take advantage of our services should call us at: 508-979-7150 800-929-9721 during the hours of 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. Callers can be seen by appointment unless there is and emergency. Home visits are available for home-bound seniors.
